The LGBTQ+ community is overrepresented within the homeless population. According to a study by the UCLA Williams Institute published in 2020, lesbian/gay/bisexual/queer “adults are twice as likely as the general population to have experienced homelessness in their lifetime.” And, during the prior year, “8% of transgender adults experienced homelessness.”

Additionally, LGBTQ+ youth may lose housing after telling their families they are queer. According to this USA Today article, “about 40% of youths experiencing homelessness are LGBTQ… and service providers say they must address a broader set of needs to help queer young people get back on their feet.”

There are a number of ways to support LGBTQ+ folks who are experiencing homelessness.

LGBTQ+ Cultural Sensitivity

It is important for service providers to understand the unique challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces. As well as using culturally sensitive words and terminology. Our Hamilton County homeless services system prioritizes LGBTQ+ cultural sensitivity training. Staff learn about the difference between gender identity and gender expression. Additionally, they learn the importance of inclusive language. And how to create intake forms with inclusive language regarding sex, gender, relationship status, and family structure.

Assisting LGBTQ+ Youth

Our partners at Lighthouse Youth and Family Services are strong advocates for LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness. Their shelters are LGBTQ+ positive spaces. And they teach LGBTQ+ Cultural Sensitivity trainings for our community. Additionally, recently the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) launched a new initiative to support LGBTQ+ youth. It includes the release of a new toolkit “focused on best practices for supporting LGBTQI+ youth.” In addition, HUD will offer a new and regular training series.

LGBTQ+ Specific Housing

There is an effort nationwide to provide affordable housing for LGBTQ+ folks. Including here in Cincinnati. John Arthur Flats opened in 2022 and offers affordable housing to LGBTQ+ seniors. In addition, our long-time partner Caracole provides services on site. Access to affordable housing prevents homelessness.

LGBTQ+ and Homelessness – Looking Ahead

During Pride month we are proud to support the LGBTQ+ community. And recognize the unique contributions of our LGBTQ+ neighbors. Additionally, we are committed to responding in culturally sensitive ways to LGBTQ+ folks experiencing homelessness or housing instability. And we are committed to responding this way year-around.
